Re: Information Flow Diagram

Roger,

I'm a little confused, you refer to requirements and TO-BE PROCESSES. Then you refer to TO-BE DESIGNs. Clarify please!

Do you mean data flow diagrams or do you mean information flow in the context of UML Activity diagrams?

Till later.

warm regards,

Re: Information Flow Diagram

HI:

Data flow diagrams are information flow diagrams.   Only data flow diagrams capture the flow of data (i.e., information).  Use cases and activity diagrams are essentially data flow diagrams without the data flows.

When I took the Yourdon course on data flow diagramming, they taught us that ninty eight percent (98%) of the required work is AS-IS modeling.  The other 2% includes TO-BE modeling.   While that stat may be extreme, I have found that  when I have an adequate understanding of the AS-IS, the TO-BE is very straight forward.   If you are wondering how to do a TO-BE, I will bet a good buck that the real issue is not understanding tha AS-IS.

Problem:  Management often tends to see AS-IS analysis as largely a a waste of money: after all, the TO-BE is what drives a solution.
