Career Advoce

Hi Everyone,

I am currently a Premium Analyst for an insurance administrator. I am responsible for reviewing bill files that are sent to large payroll offices. The bill files incdicate how much the employer shoud deduct from an employee for certain benefits they are enrolled into. We then receive a payment file indicating who was deducted from, and how much was received for each person. There are reports generated, based on the information on the payment files, and the next pay period, we bill according to what was received (the cycle starts over).

I have been with this company for two years, and started in customer service. I took the premium analyst job six months ago, and I have already become well versed in the position. Actually it's becoming a bit boring, my manager has advised me that she believes I would make a good business analyst. Does anyone have any advice on how I can move towards becoming a BA? My manager has tried to include me in some of the processes the BA's perform, and even told me she believes I would make a great BA. However I am finding that it is not going anywhere, and I basically feel like I am "stuck" in my position.  I really want to move forward, and be challenged, but I am unsure how to get there.

Any advice or tips would be greatly appreciated. I thank you for your time.

Jonathan

Welcome to the community, Jonathan!

Most BAs migrate in to the role via the route your manager seems to be facilitating for you. This is the easiest route as getting the first position is the hardest position to get! If you can, I would persist with the route your manager is helping you with...Why is it not going anywhere so far do you think?

If you do have insurmountable obstacles to getting to be a BA in your current company I would suggest

1. reworking your CV to emphasise the analytical activities that you have been performing even if you are not called one.

2. Get a testimonial from your manager to the effect that you show great aptitude for being a BA

3. work up a sample of some analysis (process model maybe based on the contents of your first paragraph in your post?)

4. start job hunting!

You might want to analyse what you want from your BA career and I have written an article that suggests how you can do that analysis and what is involved in being a business analyst.

Good luck!

Guy
