Reusable Requirements Toolkit?
Modified By Paul V on 12/28/2009 8:06:24 AM)

In an effort to promote consistency and quality in our project requirements, I envision a Reusable Requirements Toolkit. This toolkit will take a neutral approach that helps guide the way for BAs through the Definition phase.

The Toolkit provides a comprehensive starting point for identifying the business and technical requirements by offering pre-made, ready to be cut-and-pasted, requirements into the BR or SR. Rapid requirements identification is assisted by leveraging this toolkit.
I am reaching out to all to investigate a good start to my vision. Is there a source to download/borrow/purchase ready-made common requirements? Thoughts???

In terms of business requirements, I am not sure what you are after in asking for help to develop "pre-made ready to be cut-and-pasted requirements".  The essential business requirements for one system are going to differ from another system.  Can you elaborate?

Re: Reusable Requirements Toolkit?

The typical responsibilities of Requirements Reuse are to:
·    Improve the quality of the requirements by reusing requirements of known high quality.
·    Increase requirements team productivity by eliminating most of the work of re-elicitating, reanalyzing, and respecifying them.
·    Decrease time to market by eliminating redundant requirements engineering effort.

What I had in mind was to categorize by major function (eg., GUI initiatives) or simply stating non-functional or even solution type requirements most common to almost any project.
Again, the purpose is to simply state a “generic” requirement of acceptable quality to help consolidate common points and foster more explicit, comprehensive business and systems requirements. Far too often, the requirements teams do not include skilled BAs and the task of identifying requirements fall onto SMEs or other roles without sound concepts of effective requirements. A repository of Re-usable requirements is an aid to start the documentation process in the right direction.

Sorry, I can not help you: I only deal with business requirements.  Business requrements are non-generic.

 Hi Paul,

Search on amazon or similar for books on business analysis patterns. I looked recently and found at least one. Plus I believe that companies like IBM have developed sets of analysis patterns for various vertical markets. The book I looked at was pretty technical and perhaps not really for BAs - didn't buy it though.

This is currently an area of interest for me too. Perhaps you can post anything you find?

I think there is plenty of scope for the establishment of analysis patterns for common business problems that we as BAs can then tailor for our particular projects. Its a great potential productivity leap for us as BAs. Why reinvent the wheel on every project?
