Our Community Blog puts a different spin on our original blog page. Instead of each community member creating a separate blog, all community members have the opportunity to contribute their very own blog posts to a single community blog. This provides greater benefit to both the bloggers and readers. Some of these benefits are:
  • Viewers can RSS the Community Blog by a specific blog post author
  • Many members contributing to a single blog attracts more viewers, increasing the readership for all bloggers
  • Blog contributors can give more time and attention to each blog post since no single blogger has to provide continuous content to keep the blog fresh
  • The Community Blog gives bloggers the opportunity to make a name and brand for themselves in the business analysis profession
  • Community Blog contributors may be extended an invitation to become a blogger for the Modern Analyst blog
Our Modern Analyst Blog features blog posts from pre-selected Modern Analyst bloggers, many of which are influential contributors that are shaping the business analysis profession. In addition, the most intersting and insightful Community Blog posts are selected by the Modern Analyst team to be added to the Modern Analyst Blog.
 
While our original blogs and blog posts will remain available for viewing, community members will only be able to contribute new blog posts to the Community Blog. The Community Blog and Modern Analyst Blog have been seeded with blog posts from the original blog page.

Tablet UML

In most of the projects and organizations I have worked for I have seen a very interesting pattern:
- Developers get developer specific tools such as MS Visual Studio.
- Testers get testing specific tools such as Mercury TestDirector.
- Analysts get MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. The more "progressive" organizations might provide their business analysts and systems analysts with Visio.

Wow... cool!

If you think I'm venting, you right? I am venting!

To tell you the truth: I don't get it!

There are so many great tools for requirements management and system modeling yet most organizations have not yet realized that spending a few bucks on tools for their analysts can actually improve productivity and save them money in the long run.

My gut feeling tells me that this problem is closely tied to the view of the business analyst. The business analysis, as a profession, it's just beginning to bud.

I'm hoping that, soon, most organizations will begin to realize the value that business analysts and systems analysts bring to the table. When that happens, the shortage of qualified analysts will be evident and companies will try to find other ways to increase productivity. An adequate tool is one such way!

But I digress...

What triggered these thoughts (again) was that I stumbled upon a UML tool for the Tablet PC called Tablet UML. While I have not used the product - it's a very intriguing idea. Imagine being in a JAD session or brainstorming meeting and, instead of pen & paper, using a tablet PC to capture the models being discussed.

Technologies and tools such as these are going to become more and more important and valuable as organizations realize the importance of analysts and attempt to find new ways to increase their productivity.

Regarding TABLET UML: You are absolutely right, bcas BA some times miss points while taking notes on MOM(Minutes of meeting).

Regarding BA Tools: Many projects are of short term (6 months -12 months) BA's who work in Non-IT companies (Like: Companies who work on their internal projects ) cant afford to invest 1000's of $ on BA tools.Bcas they (companies)may not use these softwares once the project is completed , in fact most BA's are on Contract jobs.
IT-Companies(Like: software development companies) can afford to purchase the tool's bcas they HIRE BA's for longterm and they work on multiple projects.

I personally feel companies who cant afford to Purchase BA tools can look after Open-source Tools like "Savvion (BPM tool)" which are free of cost and more helpful to BA's routine job.
