BA on Active Directory Project - Need Advice

Hey everyone,

I just landed a new job as the lead BA on a infrastructure project. The goal of the project is to migrate all users and services from one domain to a new domain. I am starting in on the project which as been ongoing for awhile now. Currently a test domain has been created and users and services are being moved to the test domain. My first order of business is to come up with a test strategy for this and some testing processes / guidelines we can use and follow and apply to each item we test. I have been in IT for over 13 years and have worked on hundreds of projects, but nothing like this one. Guess its a little overwhelming, just looking for some pointers and advice on where to start, if there are current industry testing standards I can apply to this. Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks,
codefinder

Re: BA on Active Directory Project - Need Advice

 Hi codefinder,

I suggest you start with any specs that have been written. Are there business requirement, functional requirements or any other specification? You also need to test to the design documents. If there aren't any specs in existence, then you'll have to pretty much work out yourself what the project is trying to achieve and design your test cases around that. Remember to include an end to end test i.e. don't just test in silos.

In your shoes, I'd probably write a test strategy. In this you define how you're going to go about doing the testing. If you're unsure, this is a good thing to do first in order to get your head around what you need to do and also to validate your ideas with the project stakeholders.

Re: BA on Active Directory Project - Need Advice

 Codefinder,

I'd swing via ITIL (google it) to learn a bit about the "how to" and the various components. Check out the wiki on ITIL. Use the headings to set your scope (do you have to manage security etc)

Google ITIL and select "images" - I've never seen so many lovely diagrams, it actually quite impressive.

warm regards,

K

As Business Analysts in Agile teams, we often hear about Definition of Ready (DOR) and Definition of Done (DOD). But beyond the buzzwords, these two concepts are powerful tools to drive clarity, consistency, and quality in our work. Definition of Ready ensures a user story is truly ready for development. It answers: Is this story clear, feasible...
In today's fast-paced digital world, successful projects aren't just built on great code—they're built on clarity. And that clarity often comes from one key player: the Business Analyst. At the heart of every great product or system is a need—a business goal, a customer pain point, or a regulatory requirement. But busines...
I have always loved cooking. I learned from my Grandma June and her kitchen was her sanctuary, a small, warm sunlit space filled with jars of spices, stacks of cookbooks, and the comforting smell of something always on the stove or baking in the oven. Grandma June was as great a cook as she was a teacher to me. She never followed a recipe “to...
