Top 3 open source programs for BAs?

Does anyone here tend to use open source software in their BA work? If so, what are your go-to programs? Also has anyone had a large company back open source application use?

Re: Top 3 open source programs for BAs?

 Hi Spooner,

Can't help you with that, but here are my top 3 quotes of all time:

1. Lady Astor and Winston Churchill. Lady Astor "Mr Churchill, you're drunk!". Churchill "Madam, you're ugly. In the morning I shall be sober."

2. W.C. Fields: "It was a woman who drove me to drink and I never had the courtesy to thank her"

3. My grandfather: "if you see a good pom shoot him, cause he'll go bad eventually!"

Happy days

Kimbo

Re: Top 3 open source programs for BAs?

My dear Spooner,

Last question first, I’ve never used free software on an assignment for the main deliverable. Imagine things go wrong and you have all your “stuff” in a database that’s inaccessible and not supported – Phew!

I do use “free” 30-day evaluation copies to enlighten those who need to “play”.  Most of the software products about do have an almost “intuitive” interface. So I put a few of these in the “sandpit”, instruct them how to play and let them loose. You’d be surprised what a learning experience that is.

When it comes to the nitty-gritty, I still use my favourites! Visio is not one of them!

Happy days!

K.
PS. And one of my favourite quotes is: "Believe nothing of what you hear and only half of what you see!".

As Business Analysts in Agile teams, we often hear about Definition of Ready (DOR) and Definition of Done (DOD). But beyond the buzzwords, these two concepts are powerful tools to drive clarity, consistency, and quality in our work. Definition of Ready ensures a user story is truly ready for development. It answers: Is this story clear, feasible...
In today's fast-paced digital world, successful projects aren't just built on great code—they're built on clarity. And that clarity often comes from one key player: the Business Analyst. At the heart of every great product or system is a need—a business goal, a customer pain point, or a regulatory requirement. But busines...
I have always loved cooking. I learned from my Grandma June and her kitchen was her sanctuary, a small, warm sunlit space filled with jars of spices, stacks of cookbooks, and the comforting smell of something always on the stove or baking in the oven. Grandma June was as great a cook as she was a teacher to me. She never followed a recipe “to...
