Hereby listed some tools I'm familiar, SQL: It is the most widely used for structured data query and analysis, mainly for programmers and database administers;
R project: R is of object-oriented programming style with the flexible chart plotting ability, inbuilt with several statistics and mathematics analysis capabilities.
esProc: It is specialized in the interactive analysis on quatitative structured data that could be complex.
Excel:It is a spreadsheet with intuitive interface, outstanding computation capability and excellent chart tools.
esCalc: It is an intelligent spreadsheet that is specialized for batch structured data calculation and analytics.
Actually speaking, SQL, R and esProc may not be regarded as tools, but script languages.
I use business analysis software like:
esCalc, esProc and Excel.

I prefer Ms Excel and esCalc, both of them are spreadsheets, but each of them have excellent advantages.
Excel is generally used for various business, such as data store, statistics, calculation, analytics,etc., but its shortcoming is that Excel VBA is too complex for non-professional users.
EsCalc doesn't have so diversified capabilities, but it is more capable for complex data process for non-professionals, as it has similar interface of Excel, but more efficient and agile for complex data process.
There are also many other tools like R, esProc, Matlob, SAS, they are quite more complex and expensive for general use.
As consultants, we stick with Office and Visio, as above. Our standard approach does not involve prototyping, but will use clients' tools as needed.
Is there any specific reason for why you choose to use Visio for both DFD and ERD. Other people preffer to use different software for ERD (Erwin)..
