Career Change

I have a couple of questions. I am currently changing careers by going to school to become a BSA. I just started my BSIT-BSA program at University of Phoenix. My ultimate goal is to one day become a project manager. I truly believe I have the skills to be a great one.

1) I am currently unemployed and was wondering if there were any certifications I could get in the mean time that would help me get into an entry level position. I have about one year of computer repair experience along with an Associate of Arts degree in Information Technology. The economy and job market sucks right now so I am trying to figure out what my best avenue is for getting an entry level job.

2) Should I look for an entry level position in something other than BSA to start out my IT career? Any answers would be a great help. Thank you in advance for any responses.

Re: Career Change

Hi Clay,

If your ultimate goal is to become a Project Manager, why are you spending your time in a BSA program?  Why not enroll in a Project Management program?

The first thing you need to do is decide what you want/love to do with your career (read about the various roles, types of competencies needed, what they do day to day, etc.).  Then you can make a plan on how to get there.

On the certification side, the CBAP is the standard certification for Business Analysts and the PMP is the standard certification for Project Managers however both require a number of years of experience in the respective fields.
