What do you think of eLearning to support professional development?

I'm interested in the potential for eLearning as a means of professional development. It seems very convenient and affordable. For me, it's attractive as I can train myself outside of work hours which avoids loss of income.

On the downside, there is limited opportunity for instructor interaction, limited training products and unknown quality.

Re: What do you think of eLearning to support professional development?

Alex,

What makes you think that “external e-learning” is not better than full-time study? I’ve encountered many a new “full-time” graduate that knows absolutely nothing about Business Analysis, because they spend 2 or maybe 3 lectures on techniques and perhaps one assignment. However, I also encountered SMEs who have gone onto taking courses in instructor-led business analysis course, and some who have finished degrees in the traditional long-distance mode. These Business Analyst seem to do quite well, except they tend to be Functional BAs (they know accounting or marketing very well etc.).

Do the e-learning course as it appears to be the new modality of educational service delivery. What will make a difference is your motivation. Its common knowledge that mature aged students - those older than 25 and working fulltime – do better than full-time under 25 year-old students, because they are more motivated.

All the best with your “learning” and motivations..

Warm regards,
K

Re: What do you think of eLearning to support professional development?

Hi K

thanks for your reply. I guess the key criteria is the quality of the material and the instruction, NOT the mode of delivery. This makes a lot of sense.

To be clear, I and interested in opinions on eLearning in general and any specific experience not to assist with my learning but more because I am writing an article for my blog.

What does everyone else think?

Alex

There are different layers to learning. (See here for an into to this idea and links to more info.)

I am presuming you are referring to e-learning as online video/text modules, and noyt online facilitated sessions with trainers avialable and chatting.

Online in isolated, independent, linear learning.  It's probably less effective than reading a book.  As a result it's probably only a good channel for delivering basic, simple messages.  The training industry might want to tell you something different becasue they are selling sometning, and e-learning is cheaper to deliver.  I expect one day I'll be selling stuff via that channel also.

What you get out of a classroom is a much richer experience.  You not only recieve information from a teacher and their resources, but you discuss and and given space to reflect as you go, often through excecises.

In my opinion the best thing about face to face sessions is the ability to discuss experiences.

That only works if your students are the type to open up and talk.  And if they aren't then it's part of yur job to encourage the discussion along.

I am presuming you are asking the question based on a desire to package up some of your knowledge and pass it on.  The face to face will be more personally rewarding, and more expensive per session.  Online modules can reacha  wider audience but should be focused on simpler skill based topics.

Hello,

It is a knowledge age, and if you want to be on the top of your profession then you have to keep your self updated, and eLerning is one of the most feasable way to keep your self updated regarding changes that occurs in your area of interest or any latest development that occurs in that area.
