What does a BA do in Production Support ?

Has anyone had any experience, brainstorming ideas, friends etc, in this realm ?

The BA is not working in " Project " mode, but in " Production Support " mode.

Any and all ideas welcome

Re: What does a BA do in Production Support ?

Hi:

Back in the 80's, I worked Aerospace (McDonnell Douglas and Hughes Aircraft) and having analysts in production support was common.  I think it will be more prevalent when production operations are complex, including heavy use of automation.

Re: What does a BA do in Production Support ?

 Thanks Tony,

I'm trying to figure out where the " Business " component of acronyms BA/BSA work fits in with Production Support.

Understandably, BA work can span the entire gamut of an organization's machinery. As you say, perhaps it's the complex operations that call for a BA's involvement

Re: What does a BA do in Production Support ?

A few of the BA's here where I work are considered technical SME's and support the application spaces that they are operating in as third-level support.  Fortunately for me, my space already has third- and fourth-level support, so I'm not "on call" as a support person.  I'd prefer not being in a support role (been there, done that, got the bleary eyes from the 2AM pager calls to show for it), but I can see in some organizations where the BA might have sufficient product knowledge, and no other support exists, and is called upon to help support the team.  Sometimes the BA is an extension of the IT organization (like ours) and sometimes is part of the business itself, so YMMV.

Re: What does a BA do in Production Support ?

Given the situation where the system is not working in the way an end user expects it to, but is not "broken", the BA might be called upon to determine if the system is working as originally intended or not.  That may simply be a matter of clarifying existing requirements or it may be a matter of discovering new requirements that were previously unknown or that have changed since the system was built.  This has been a common activity for me in the past.

There's also situations where new requirements call for changes to a system, but not necessarily enough to launch a full "project."  In which case, the BA would do the same as usual, but maybe on a smaller scale.

Another common situation I've been in is when there are changes that originate outside of a system I support will impact my system (or an impact is suspected).  The BA would then analyze those impacts.
