 Hi,

If I have an Activity Diagram that has:

 - a number of Actors defined in swimlanes - 

 - a number of tasks which are modelled within the swimlanes.

 

If I have a task that more than one of the actors can initiate, what is the best way to model this.  My take would be a Generalised Actor that would appear as a new swimlane.  However, I'm interested

Remember, swimlanes are a means of organization, and they are chosen a bit arbitrarily.  Perhaps your swimlanes are too granular.  But if not, there are other options.

1) Consider an OR or XOR gateway with one path leading to the first actor swimlane containing your task and another path leading to the second actor swimlane containing your task.  Then, you can merge the paths back when appropriate.

2) Another option is to name a thrid swimlane as Actor 1/Actor 2.  This works best when there are a number of disparate tasks throughout the process that could be done by either actor.
