Entry Level BA

Hello Everyone,

I am an entry level BA. I have my bachelors in Management, and working on my MBA in Finance/Marketing. I enjoy the job a lot because I have to communicate with majority of all the departments, business owners, stakeholders, etc. I am have to create requirements for an API, UI and a call center requirements. Need guidance. Is there a specific template you use to gather requirements? How do you elicit requirements from the business? What is a requirements catalog? Please advise. I've goggled these questions but reading an articke, or reading from a book is completely different once you are actually in the field. Also, I found online that one can get certified for a BA. It costs money to signup for that course and cost a lot of money to take the test. Is it worth it? Has anyone here done that course? Did you get a raise once completed? Any input would be greatly appreciated. Have an awesome day everyone and Happy Halloween!

Thanks!1

Re: Entry Level BA

"Is there a specific template you use to gather requirements?"

Yellow Legal Pad used to write them down quickly ... later entered into Excel with a number ... this number is used when you write your functional specs and it points back to the business requirements you gathered ... it is called a traceability matrix.

-----

"How do you elicit requirements from the business?"

Initially set up a meeting with the stakeholders and ask questions. Draw pictures (wire frames) of what they want for a user interface, what kind of reports and layouts. Talk to the uses too and see what they think.

Re: Entry Level BA

Thanks! I set up meetings with the business and was able to gather requirements and determine exactly what they wanted. And was able to transfer gathered data to a traceability matrix.

Next, I have to document requirements for UI (User Interface). I have completely stuck with this!! I am not too sure what would be examples of requirements for a UI. I know the applications that the business is using and how they function. But I am not sure how to word the requirements..

Re: Entry Level BA

"I am not too sure what would be examples of requirements for a UI. "

Draw out the screen, on paper the way they want it to look. You don't need fancy expensive software ... I've used Word before using the Insert, Shapes and select the square box and stretch it the way you want ... put the field text above it.

      Account Number

Now list the fields and describe what must be done.

(1) Account Number (AcctNum)

 20 Alpha-Numeric, Caps Only

Validate 20 chars have been entered

If Account Number is Blank ... Error Message = "Invalid Account Number".

If Account Number entered ... Check database that account number valid ... if Invalid, Error Message = "Invalid Account Number".

do this to what ever other fields are on screen ...

*** IF Valid Account Number Entered ***

(2) Display Account Holder Name, Address, City, Zip

Etc.
