Tech Writer to Business Analyst

 Dear all,

I have been a technical writer for five years. Along the way I have dabbled in marketing collateral, content management, and requirement analysis. I really want to become a BA, and have always wanted to be one. I have a set of questions, which I would request the forum members to help me on. I will truly appreciate your responses.

  • Is it possible for a tech writer to become a BA?
  • What education will be required to become one
  • How do I transition into a BA. Can I do some courses.
  • What can I do in my present job to practically implement what a BA does

Thanks,

Jithoo

Re: Tech Writer to Business Analyst

 Hi Jithoo,

Technical writer is a very common career path for a BA and it's likely you have many relevant experiences. Depending on how much requirements analysis work you've done, you might already "be a BA" and it's more a matter of repositioning your role, either in your current organization or in a job search process.

The clearest transition path for new BAs is to start building relevant career experiences. In your existing role, do you have the opportunity to do any BA work? Can you build on that? Can you run a meeting, scope a project, or be the communication bridge?

There is no one answer to your question, but you might check out a couple of posts I wrote on the topic:

Wishing you the best of luck,

Re: Tech Writer to Business Analyst

Hi

I never got around to sitting the exam but I found studying the ISEB book Business Analysis gave me some context.  That was a few years ago and unfortunately I don't think there's a new edition out so I'd make sure you supplement it with plenty of reading on ma.com
