How can I get project experience?

Hello all.

I am a Bachelor of Business Administration graduate with a specialization in Finance. I am currently working at a technical helpdesk for IBM supporting a global client. I want to get into a BA role and fully understand the roles and responsibilities of the BA. In searching for BA positions, even Junior BA, they all require previous project experience. So, how am I supposed to obtain project experience if every job out there requires project experience in the first place.

I thought about volunteering but I'm not sure where to start or whom to contact for this kind of position. I live in Toronto, Canada. If there's anyone out there that can offer me some advice that would be much appreciated! If you need anymore info about my background please let me know and I'll gladly provide it to you.

Re: How can I get project experience?

The best you can do is to get into a good training program that will not just tech you the theorotical aspect of business analysis but the practical side in terms of projects or case stdies.

When you sy u fully understand the role of BA , I would challenge you if you know all the skill sets, techniques etc that  BA must know like scoping, Use cases, process modelling, brd, frd , traceability, change mngement etc...can you work on a project and create all these requirement docs ? if the ans is no, you need to learn all that...

have an approach in terms of how you want to make a career change

To get started as a BA you need to prepare ypurself step wise. Training shall be taken and you should be careful with what you are getting into.

I will give you an example of our course BA bootcamp that prepares freshers for the BA job.

1. 1st step is to learn the basics of Business analysis. We do that with lots of case studies that help students understand what they will get hen they start working. Lot of the courses that you get in the market teach theortical concepts and do not cover the practical aspects. Our trainers take actual projects and teach students how to write various requirements in the class for those projects. Our clients have called us back lot of times to tell us that our students know a lot more than other BA's working in their company.

2. 2nd step is to prepare for mock intervies. You have to start speaking the language of a BA and mock intervies prepare you for that,Our students feel that almost 99% of the questions were covered as part of the mock interview sessions. You should be prepared to that level before going for interviews

3. 3rd step is to make sure that yuour resume is right for BA market. We screen the resume of our students and make sure that it is suitable as per the latest trend in the market.

If you follow these steps, you will definitely secure a job as a BA. Let me know if you have any other question

Thanks

Supriya

Re: How can I get project experience?

I presume you've approached your employer, IBM? Often the easiest way to change direction is within the same company. Why don't you find out the name of the BA manager or whatever their title is in your office. Then approach them directly - invite them out for a coffee and a chat or something.

Kimbo

P.S. ignore the guy trying to sell you more training. You have enough to get a BA job.

Re: How can I get project experience?

Thank you for the advice supriya. I had thought about taking a BA course but there's soo many institutions out there who promise to mentor you and get you a job and all that jazz but who really knows if they actually help you once you pay them.

Re: How can I get project experience?

Hey Kimbo,

Yeah, I've heared from a lot of the guys tryna sell me the training course. In one way, it would be good because I'm not familiar with the modeling techniques as well as scoping and other technicalities that BA's deal with in gathering requirements. If I can land a position that's willing to teach me these processed that would be awesome but chances are, empoyers are looking for people who already know and are filimar with the tools and techniques BA's use.

I will definatly try and reach out to the BA manager here and see if he/she can guide me.

Thank you,

Mitesh Khatri
