Do You Put Years Of Experience On Your Resume?

I've seen articles that say to eliminate the years of experience on your resume to try and not show your age.

So, On my resume I have: "25+ years experience developing systems ....." and some articles say to change it to something like: "Experienced at developing systems..." to not show age.

However, I let them know up front my experience....and they can guess my age. I don't want to get all dressed up in a suit and tie, drive somewhere for an interview and then get eliminated for age.

Why hide it?

Any ideas or comments?

Nick,

We work in an age where an IT professional over the age of 45 is an endangered species. Over 50, is just plain masochistic! And, the 28+ manager does not want to work with his/her “Dad”.

You are working in a society that’s quite eloquent in telling you what they don’t like. But, ask them to tell you what they do like and they struggle to give you an answer. Now you know why Facebook has a “like” button because the default is “dislike”.

My suggestion is to put your picture on your CV. Tell them what you did for the last 8 years or so, and summarise the rest (eg. BA and Test analyst, Logistics for DHL; BA and Project Management for AirCargo for Virgin etc). If they are interested and need your expertise, they’ll call.

All the best.
K

Aahhh, Nick!

You made me laugh, mate! Perhaps putting the picture on the CV is not such a good idea, then!

I put my picture on so they know what theyre getting - No surprises!

 Chaps,

I'm of a certain age now - plus 50 - and I show all my experience on my CV. I think it lends gravitas and dignity :-)

To be honest I don't wanna work for kids unless they want to hire someone with experience.

I didn't start in IT until my late 20s, so they think I'm in my 40s anyway.

Kimbo
