INTERVIEW QUESTION:

How can a business analyst identify when a business process needs a paradigm shift rather than incremental improvement?

ANSWER

A business analyst can identify the need for a paradigm shift by looking for persistent pain points that remain unsolved despite repeated optimization.  When processes have been streamlined, automated, or reorganized yet still fail to meet goals, the issue likely lies in the underlying model itself.

Indicators that a paradigm shift may be required:

  • Frequent workarounds or duplicated efforts
  • Disconnected systems that create redundant data entry
  • Business goals that evolve faster than supporting workflows
  • “Shadow processes” where users bypass formal systems to get work done

Incremental improvements focus on efficiency; paradigm shifts focus on effectiveness and relevance.

A skilled BA recognizes when improving the current process is no longer enough—and helps the organization reimagine how the work should be done altogether.
