Data Migration is the process of making a copy of data and moving it from one device or system to another, preferably without disrupting or disabling active business processing. After data is transferred, processing uses the new device or system.
Simple steps included in the migration of data are
1. Identify what data you’re migrating, what format it’s currently in, where it lives, and what format it should be in post-migration i.e. Location, Format, and Sensitivity of data.
2. Before the migration, just make sure that all of your data is backed up, especially the files that you’ll be migrating i.e. Backup of your data.
3. Define the scope of the data migration plan. Plan out the resources you’ll need to use during the migration and put a realistic budget in place i.e. Scope and Size of your project.
4. Data Migration is a big job to do. Make sure your team has the knowledge and skills necessary to accomplish the project or any outside expert. All necessary resources and sufficient time are available to your team i.e. Assess Staff and Tools.
5. Ensure this data is cleaned to protect the target system, then transform it into the proper format for transfer. Finally, load your cleaned and deduplicated data into your target system data migration rules and map you’ve already laid out. i.e. Proper execution of the migration plan.
6. Once the migration is finished, assure there are no connectivity problems with source and target systems. The goal is to ensure all data migrated is correct, secure, and in the proper location i.e. Testing after migration.
7. Even with testing, it’s always possible that an error was made during migration. To account for this, conduct a full audit of the system and data quality to ensure everything is correct once the data migration process has completed i.e. Follow up and Maintenance of data.
