ANSWER

The Elicitation knowledge area structures the activity of eliciting requirements into 4 main tasks.  These BABOK tasks are:

  1. Prepare for Elicitation
  2. Conduct Elicitation Activity
  3. Document Elicitation Results
  4. Confirm Elicitation Results

During Preparation for Elicitation, the business analyst will identify a combination of elicitation techniques that will be used in the Conduct Elicitation activity.  The appropriate techniques are identified based on a number of factors such as the business domain, business environment, the skill level of the Requirements Elicitation team, how open various stakeholders may be to different techniques, and the requirements deliverables that need to be created.

The Elicitation knowledge area also describes commonly used techniques for eliciting requirements, discusses what techniques are appropriate for a given situation, and provides information for the business analyst to understand what’s needed to prepare, execute, and deliver each technique.

Those various requirements elicitation techniques identified by the BABOK are:

  1. Brainstorming
  2. Document Analysis
  3. Focus Groups
  4. Interface Analysis
  5. Interviews
  6. Observation
  7. Prototyping
  8. Requirements Workshops
  9. Survey/Questionnaire

Do your homework prior to the business analysis interview!

Having an idea of the type of questions you might be asked during a business analyst interview will not only give you confidence but it will also help you to formulate your thoughts and to be better prepared to answer the interview questions you might get during the interview for a business analyst position.  Of course, just memorizing a list of business analyst interview questions will not make you a great business analyst but it might just help you get that next job.
