ANSWER

There are a number of methods used for eliciting and discovering requirements.  These methods can be categorized into two main categories:

Collaborative Interaction - these methods offer the most access to the customer and result in more accurate requirements (though they may be more time intensive/expensive):

  • Face-to-face Interviews
  • Focus Groups
  • Requirements Workshop
  • Brainstorming and Idea Reduction
  • Role Playing

Restricted Interaction - these methods control more strictly the way in which you interact with the stakeholders:

  • Observation and Job Shadowing
  • Prototype Walkthroughs
  • Questionnaires
  • Electronic Interviews
  • Legacy Code Analysis (Reverse Engineering)

Do your homework prior to the business analysis interview!

Having an idea of the type of questions you might be asked during a business analyst interview will not only give you confidence but it will also help you to formulate your thoughts and to be better prepared to answer the interview questions you might get during the interview for a business analyst position.  Of course, just memorizing a list of business analyst interview questions will not make you a great business analyst but it might just help you get that next job.
