Modified By Iwona on 9/14/2010 9:39:36 AM)

Hello I am looking forward to start my EMBA this september 2010. At the moment I am working in the hotel as a receptionist but I can't do this any longer. I have already Bachelor Degree in Hotel and Catering Management but that's not help me at all. I want to change my carrier and to become BA. I was thinking about some entry programs... I need advice how I should get to start Thank you

Re: Need Advice

 Hi Iwona,

The best place to start if you wish to move into a Business Analyst role is to do a Bachelors degree in Business Systems.

Most universities have degrees along the lines of 'Business Systems' or 'Systems design'.  If you are more technically inclined, I have also found that many of the B.IT courses overlap with many of the B.Business Systems. If you choose this route, you could pick up elective subjects in the business school to supplement the technical courses.

The EMBA you mention is a good start as I have always been of the opinion that one MUST understand the business first and foremost. Remember though, both business and technical skills are as important as one another, hence why the skill set, and therefore Business Analysts are in high demand.

Hope this helps,

Mitch

Re: Need Advice

Maybe there are some other alternatives for you to investigate that don't involve another bachelors degree.

  • Consider an MBA
  • Contact your local recruiters - they may not be that interested but ask them about appropriate traijing for your goals and your city's market

And the best advice for you right now;

  • Study the job ads.
  • Create a spreadsheet.
  • Make a column of skills and knowledge people want
  • Score them for frequency and importance
  • Assess yourself against these skills (and ask a couple of friends to as well for a more balanced and independent view)
  • Highlight the top 3-5 areas you need to work on

You have just done your forst BA job.  A gap analysis.

Next you have to find something to do to fill those gaps.  If you want you could publish the gap items here and we could give you sme more specific advice.  I am sure other readers would like this as well.

All the best

Craig

As Business Analysts in Agile teams, we often hear about Definition of Ready (DOR) and Definition of Done (DOD). But beyond the buzzwords, these two concepts are powerful tools to drive clarity, consistency, and quality in our work. Definition of Ready ensures a user story is truly ready for development. It answers: Is this story clear, feasible...
In today's fast-paced digital world, successful projects aren't just built on great code—they're built on clarity. And that clarity often comes from one key player: the Business Analyst. At the heart of every great product or system is a need—a business goal, a customer pain point, or a regulatory requirement. But busines...
I have always loved cooking. I learned from my Grandma June and her kitchen was her sanctuary, a small, warm sunlit space filled with jars of spices, stacks of cookbooks, and the comforting smell of something always on the stove or baking in the oven. Grandma June was as great a cook as she was a teacher to me. She never followed a recipe “to...
