StackExchange for Business Analysts/Product Managers

I was searching for a stack exchange for BAs to post a question, when I realized I don't think there exists one.

If you do know of a stack exchange which caters to us, please do point me in that direction and you won't need to read the rest of this post.

So, to present my case, though its nice to have these other forums, but I feel business analysis as a practice has grown enough to deserve its own stackexchange which can serve as authoritative knowledge that a lot of BAs are seeking on a daily basis with its unique features of upvoting, reputation etc.

However, there is a whole process which would require several BAs to get involved and work towards making this a reality.
I have posted below a link to the FAQs for creating a new stack Exchange site for BAs / and maybe even Product Managers (I know they vary in their functions but there is some overlap)
https://area51.stackexchange.com/faq

Please let me know if you're interested and we could work to make this happen.

Anjali,

I appreciate your passion in this area.  The idea for a StackExchange type site for BAs and Product Managers does certainly seem appealing at first glance.  But I think one of the reasons this doesn't exist (I'm assuming since you didn't find it) is because of the type of questions that work well on a StackExchange site.

If you look at the section called "What Makes Good Questions" you will see that they talk about the need for questions to be specific and be able to be answered objectively, rather than subjectively.  The Business Analysis and Product Management world is extremely subjective.  There are many opinions, some agreed about by most in the profession, but still very few questions that can ever be answered objectively.

Re: StackExchange for Business Analysts/Product Managers

@Chris, I did mail you as you asked in your reply above, but haven't received a response back so I decided to post my response here as well for other people who might be visiting

First of all, please go check out http://area51.stackexchange.com/proposals/103542/business-analysis-and-product-management?referrer=tQD5stAn83fVn9212Iwh9g2

A proposal site has been created and we need 60 followers and 40 example questions with 10 net upvotes. Since the site is in definition phase we just have to post example questions (really short ones).

Please click on Follow button on top left AND verify your email after that for the follow to count.

Now coming back to Chris' question about Business Analysis and Product Management being a subjective field, I agree with it but also think that its not wholly subjective. Any kind of analysis has lots of objectivity to it. Questions about analysis techniques, UML and other diagrams, traceability, to name a few can be pretty objective. But even if we're talking about subjective things, Stack Exchange does not totally exclude such topics. From what I read, their primary purpose to "avoid" subjective topics is to avoid topics which lead to unnecesary debates and arguments without facts backing those. Robert Cartiano describes how subjective questions has a place on StackExchange and due to the close monitoring on the community subjective topics can be kept useful for everyone. (https://blog.stackoverflow.com/2010/09/good-subjective-bad-subjective/)

So please lets get together to start what could be a knowledgebase for the the BA and Prod Mgmt in the future. We cant do it without your help!

Please let me know if there are any questions!

Re: StackExchange for Business Analysts/Product Managers

I received some feedback that I should include the steps to how to follow, add example questions etc. so I've given those below.

There are 3 ways to participate. At a minimum follow the proposal, but if you can please follow the steps 2 and 3 as well

1. Follow the proposal

2. Vote for example questions

3. Add Example Questions

4. [as needed] Ask questions about the proposal process in the discussion area.

1.  FOLLOW THE PROPOSAL by following the steps given below

1 Click on this URL  http://area51.stackexchange.com/proposals/103542/business-analysis-and-product-management?referrer=tQD5stAn83fVn9212Iwh9g2

Submit

2 Click on the Follow it! button

3 You will be asked to provide your email address. Submit the form.

4 Check your email address and click on the link provided to verify your email ID

Optional Steps, but highly recommended

5 Once your email is verified, on the area51 page click on Register on the top panel

6 On the Area51 Register page, select any of the open ID options and complete registration

2. VOTE FOR QUESTIONS :

1. Review the questions, and click on the upvote arrow if you think the question is a valid example question for the this proposal.

Remember each user gets only 5 upvotes!

2. Downvote questions which are bad example questions. One reason I would downvote a question is if I know an answer can be found by a quick google search. [Eg. What should I include in an BRD].  But if you downvote, do try to provide your comments on why you think its a bad question. It helps people join the discussion and define the boundaries of the site.

3. [optional] Comment on questions if you have any questions or comments about the question. Please DO NOT answer the questions here. That will be needed in the next phase.

Once you follow and register, you can share your own follow link to add points to your profile.

3. ADD YOUR EXAMPLE QUESTIONS

1. On the proposal page, scroll down to enter your example questions and click on Post your example questions. Please note, it has to be really short i.e. only 150 characters allowed.

Remember, the example questions can be any question that

1. You may have an answer to, but you think is an interesting question

2. You may have wanted to ask someone in the past [or present] . Though you may not get an answer to it right away, people will be able to answer that once the project goes into commitment phase.

Additionally, Ask your questions about the process

Feel free to ask questions about the proposal process by adding a new discussion question on top by clicking on Add a new discussion.

Please do let me know if anything else I can help to move this proposal along.
