You can still access our Original Blog Posts below.

Our Community Blog puts a different spin on our original blog page. Instead of each community member creating a separate blog, all community members have the opportunity to contribute their very own blog posts to a single community blog. This provides greater benefit to both the bloggers and readers. Some of these benefits are:
  • Viewers can RSS the Community Blog by a specific blog post author
  • Many members contributing to a single blog attracts more viewers, increasing the readership for all bloggers
  • Blog contributors can give more time and attention to each blog post since no single blogger has to provide continuous content to keep the blog fresh
  • The Community Blog gives bloggers the opportunity to make a name and brand for themselves in the business analysis profession
  • Community Blog contributors may be extended an invitation to become a blogger for the Modern Analyst blog
Our Modern Analyst Blog features blog posts from pre-selected Modern Analyst bloggers, many of which are influential contributors that are shaping the business analysis profession. In addition, the most intersting and insightful Community Blog posts are selected by the Modern Analyst team to be added to the Modern Analyst Blog.

While our original blogs and blog posts will remain available for viewing, community members will only be able to contribute new blog posts to the Community Blog. The Community Blog and Modern Analyst Blog have been seeded with blog posts from the original blog page.

Businesses are controlled by rules that regulate how the business operates and is structured. Rules ensure that the business is run according to predefined external (by laws or regulation) or internal (to make the business run as efficiently and profitably as possible) restriction or goal.

Business Rule can be defined as :

A Business Rule is a statement that can control or affect both the execution of a business process as well  as structure of the resources in the business.

Rules are identified by examining models, evaluating facts, talking with experts within the organization, studying laws and regulation surrounding the business, or studying how the business is run in practice.

There are basically three types of Business Rules:

I. Derivation II. Constraints III. Existence

Derivation: Rules that define how knowledge in one form transformed into other knowledge. A derivation can be either a computational rule, such as a formula for calculating a value, or an inference rule, meaning that if a certain fact is true, then another inference fact must also be true

Constraints: Rules that constrain either the possible structure or behavior of objects or process. Exp- the way objects are related to each other or the way object or process state change occurs

Existence: Rules that define when something may exist and when it should come into existence, that is, when an object is created or destroyed.

Re: What is Business Rules

Sandeep,

Great blog enrty! I would appreciate more detail on the rules, how they can be documented, the fact that a single rule may contain multiple rule to types (example: to derive a value, if a (rule that a thing exists) and is not (rule constraint) then do the derivation) and so on.

How does compliance fit in? For example the rule that storing someone's data must comply to data protection act?

Thanks for this thought provoking post.

Earn while you learn

Individuals, as well as employers, need to be concerned about their future. If they are not more productive than those in off shore locations, they will see their jobs off shored. It will not going be easy for adults given that young people are growing up with ā€œcrib side PCā€. In addition, adults will have to be as good as or better than the kids off shore. What needs to be leveraged are the advantages provided by experience, cultural understanding and communication in tandem with contextually appropriate new skills…………

Re: What is Business Rules

I wasn't even aware that there was a blog specifically for business analyst certification. Thanks for the heads up on the change. I'm excited to see what changes have been made.
