Does a contract BA have to be an expert in a domain and look for contracts in that domain or is there a market for BA with good all round skills and many years experience?
I am employed as a BA in a permanent role. I have worked in permanent positions for most of my career, with a short spell contracting a few years ago. I would like to work as a contractor but I have worked in a number of domains rather than building up extensive experience in a single domain. I am concerned that this would make it difficult for me to find a contract as clients would want a BA to be an expert in their domain.
I would appreciate any views on this.
I also have experience in Project Manager roles and although I would not want such a role again I am happy to take on some PM tasks it gives me a broader range of skills. Should I sell myself as more of a consultant than a BA?

I think it depends on the role. BA is very vague and widely misused.
I found getting hands on experience with tools and programming skills have expedited my movement through out organizations. As far as contract, if you have tangible skills such as SQL or .Net you can step into any environment and deliver value.
If you are PURELY functional then industry experience is critical. JMHO
